What Actually Changed

Starting January 20, 2026, verified buyers of DRM-free Kindle e-books published through KDP can download the book as EPUB and PDF from Amazon’s “Manage Your Content and Devices” page. That means readers can move the file to a non-Kindle e-reader, app or PDF reader. Royalty rates and payment structure are unchanged — this change is about formats, not money.

New Books vs Existing Books

DRM-free books published after Dec 9, 2025 — EPUB/PDF downloads are enabled automatically. You do nothing.
DRM-free books published before Dec 9, 2025 — downloads are NOT enabled by default. You must opt in per book from your KDP Bookshelf.
Books with DRM enabled — no EPUB/PDF downloads. Readers use Kindle apps and devices only.
Kindle Unlimited borrows — not eligible, even for DRM-free books. Only verified purchasers can download.
Re-applying DRM later — stops future downloads, but readers who already downloaded keep their files.

How to Change DRM on a Book

Log in to the KDP Bookshelf and click the “…” menu next to the book.
Choose “Edit eBook Content” and scroll to the Digital Rights Management section.
Pick “Yes, apply Digital Rights Management” (keep Kindle-only) or “No, do not apply…” (allow EPUB/PDF downloads).
If going DRM-free, confirm the box: “I understand that by not applying DRM, customers who buy and have already bought this book will be able to download it as a PDF or EPUB file.”
Save and publish. Changes take 24–72 hours to go live. There is no bulk setting — update each book individually.

Should You Enable DRM?

DRM blocks piracy only a little — determined readers can already convert Kindle files with free tools. The real trade-off is reach vs control: DRM-free lets readers read on any device and is friendlier to buyers; DRM keeps downloads restricted to Kindle apps. Many indie authors are staying DRM-free because the change mainly reduces friction for legitimate readers. Decide per book, and you can change your mind anytime.

Is the PDF/EPUB download automatic for my book? Only if it is DRM-free and published after December 9, 2025. Older DRM-free books need a one-time opt-in per book.
